The brief
What the job involved
An old plastic track needs to come down and a 2 metre metal pole go up in its place, with new eyelet curtains that should clear the glass when open.
There is a concrete lintel above the window that is slow to drill, so the brackets need careful placing.
Scope of work
- Take down the old track and fill the fixing holes
- Mark a level line wide enough for the curtains to stack clear of the glass
- Check the wall with a detector and find the edge of the lintel
- Fix the end brackets and a centre support bracket
- Thread the eyelet curtains, fit the finials and check they run freely
- Touch up the filled holes with the paint left from decorating
Illustrative approach
How we would go about it
Step 1: Measure for the curtains
A pole that runs past the frame on each side lets open curtains sit off the glass and keeps the room lighter.
Step 2: Find what is behind the plaster
A lintel, a cable or soft plaster changes where the brackets go, so the wall is checked before drilling.
Step 3: Support the middle
Longer poles carrying lined curtains get a centre bracket so they do not bow over time.
Step 4: Make good
Old holes filled and touched up, so the only sign of the old track is that it has gone.
